Trading as ISIS Products, (ISIS – an acronym for Intrinsically Safe Intelligent Systems) the business was born in 1989 as a division of Beacon Controls Ltd, based in Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK.
The same year, Howard Gould was appointed General Manager of ISIS Products, later to be appointed Managing Director of the Group. Over the next ten years ISIS developed a range of Zone 0 Intrinsically Safe products and established a network of distributors, sales channels and agents around the world, initially selling to the pharmaceutical market and later to the oil and gas industry. Throughout, there was an aggressive program of product development and in 1996 the world’s first Zone 0 HMI with a colour display (the ISIS600) was certified by BASEEFA.
In 1999 Beacon Controls Ltd was acquired by the Barco Group of Belgium, ISIS Products was sold separately to Technor AS and re named Technor ISIS Ltd. Howard Gould decided to stay with Beacon Controls and to a large extent lost contact with ISIS.
In 2007 Howard Gould, now running his own turnaround and interim management company having left Barco in 2001 took on a three month assignment to assist the Malton management team. The three months was subsequently extended to twelve months and he became interim Managing Director. There followed a period of streamlining and growth culminating in him and his team acquiring the business from Technor in 2009.
The timing was not ideal, trading was difficult as the major oil and gas players were struggling with the recession, inventory was being reduced and all new PO’s subjected to very close scrutiny. Rather than withdrawing from the sales effort the strategy was to become even more proactive including further product development which continues to this day.
In 2011 a US entity, iSiS-Ex Inc., was formed operating out of a facility in Houston.
After 28 years the business changed its trading name and in 2017 became HMi Elements. For over 35 years the business has grown, becoming a dominant player 100% focussed on Hazloc product design and manufacture, adding new products to its portfolio; including the world’s first 19” glass edge to edge lightweight Zone 1 HMI, a Zone 1 Data Acquisition Unit and a low cost 15” Zone 2 slimline HMI.
